Sweet Little Princess

I made this card for a birthday party we're heading to this afternoon - our friend Savannah is turning 2. We haven't seen her parents in a loonnggg time, they've been living in France. And actually, we've never even met Savannah (and they have not met Carter), so we cannot wait to see them! Only thing is - I have absolutely no idea if Savannah is a little princessy girlie-girl or not. Oh well! I had fun making the card regardless! I took today's photo with the flash on, something I don't usually do - it captured all the sparkle much better! I went a little nuts with the glitter on this card! The thing I don't like about using the flash, though, is that it completely distorted the color of the ribbon. IRL it's not nearly as hot pink, it matches the colors of the card much better! And by the way, the ribbon is totally yummy reversible May Arts - I ordered it from Verve Visual. This sweet little stamp was part of a cheap kid's set at Michael's - I couldn't resist it! The thing is - it's truly the worst stamp I've ever used! The rubber felt weird - really hard - and they did an awful job on the stamp - see all the extra lines that shouldn't be there? Like the line of her skirt going across her arm? Ugh. Her crown was a complete mess - which is exactly why I decided to hide it as much as possible with glitter! Not that I expect SU quality in the cheap bins at Michael's, but c'mon people! It's like they designed her and then forgot to delete some lines before sending her off to the factory. She's so cute, she deserves better! :-) Anyway... I like her regardless of the stray lines. I colored her in with my prismacolors and baby oil, used purple, silver & stardust stickles, and coated the scalloped background with glue & dazzling diamonds glitter. I made this card last night in my jammies, and I can't use dazzling diamonds without getting it all over me, so I'm sure it's now in my sheets too! The DP is retired SU - last year's Valentine's pack. I think I should have done something with the bottom half of the card, but I was stumped - so I just left it. What would you have done??? This is why I should always stamp with sketch challenges handy...! Thanks for stopping by today!

  • Stamps: Princess by Delta Creative
  • Paper: Pretty in Pink, Whisper White, SU DP
  • Ink: Black StazOn
  • Accessories: Prismacolor pencils, baby oil, stumps, Purple, Silver & Star Dust Stickles, Dazzling Diamonds glitter, Marvy scallop punch, A*muse bling, May Arts ribbon

All You Need Is Love...

Today I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try something completely different (for me!) - I made a card NANCY-STYLE!!! I just *adore* everything Nancy creates and posts on her blog Scrap This! - she is so talented, all of her designs are so fun and fresh and cheerful! Nancy's cards are definitely not my typical style (sadly, I don't even know if I have my own style!!) but I wanted to try one anyway. I decided to case this adorable card from her blog. The layout and basic elements are identical to what Nancy did - I just changed the colors & embellishments a bit. I had SO MUCH FUN making this card!!! I just LOVE how Nancy uses safety pins and stick pins - I had never tried this before. I don't think Nancy uses much stamping (if any) - she's definitely a scrappy chick - so I had to incorporate at least a little. I used my CUTE AS CAN BE new birdies from smARTworks, designed by the one and only Dina Kowal!! When I saw there were two little birdies facing opposite directions, I just had to make them love birds! (this is some of my rubber I mentioned the other day, that fell victim to The Menace - thanks for your concern, but I recovered it all and no damage was done, other than to my heart when it nearly went into cardiac arrest when I saw what had happened...!!) I just *love* my new smARTworks rubber - and a few other things about this awesome company - but I will be making more cards with my new stamps this week and will devote a future post entirely to gushing about them...! (so stay tuned!) :-) The other thing I loved about making this card is that it forced me to break out MANY supplies I've bought because I *loved* but then proceeded to HOARD - my BasicGrey chipboard, my Adirondack paint dabbers (LOVE THESE!), liquid pearls, a*muse bling, Heidi Grace decorative pins, Martha twine, SU pretties kit (I colored a flower from it with Bashful Blue marker, LOVE that you can do that!!), my massive Costco pad of My Mind's Eye paper that I'll still have to pass along to my grandkids if I don't start using more of it...! I have also now moved my little container of safety pins which used to be in my bathroom, to my stamp room. :-) I may have to make more Nancy-style cards in the future, they are FUN! Actually, she posted something so cool yesterday - an online workshop! She gave the step-by-step to create one of her adorable cards! I'll have to try that one this week I think. Ok, enough gushing about Nancy, I better post this before the kid wakes up... thanks for stopping by! :-)

  • Stamps: "tweet" from smARTworks, sentiment from Hampton Art Stamps
  • Paper: Groovy Guava, Very Vanilla, My Mind's Eye DP
  • Ink: Chocolate Chip, Bashful Blue marker
  • Accessories: Pretties kit flower, Heidi Grace pin, safety pin, tag corner punch, BasicGrey chipboard, Salmon Adirondack dabber, White Opal liquid pearls, A*muse bling, Cuttlebug, paper piercer, SU clear button, MS twine

Hi Libby - what a nice blog candy selection you have! Thanks for sharing with us each day - I love to read your blog!

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear...

Last week I subjected my hostess club girls to the fact that I have baby on the brain (and in the belly!) and forced them to make a baby girl card for their stash! They didn't seem to mind too terribly much. I did request that they not send this card to *me* in a few months, though. :-) We played with Fun Flock to make teddy sweet and fuzzy - it was fun indeed! I had never used it before. I think the way I applied it sort of makes teddy look well-loved and tattered, like a bunch of his fur has worn off. But I like it nonetheless! Thanks for stopping by today!

  • Ink: Black StazOn, Close to Cocoa, Creamy Caramel, Pretty in Pink, So Saffron marker

Saturday Quick Tip

Tip of the day - never apply repositionable glue and then leave your wonderful new unmounted stamps to dry on the coffee table, within reach of your 22 month old menace! And never assume that your DH, lying on the couch right next to the coffee table, will defend your stamps against the ravages of said toddler! This isn't even the worst of it - many had to be pulled from the newspaper that the menace was using to bat around the stamps. *sigh* Ok, off to sort my sticky icky rubber and figure out if any stamps are now in the newspaper recycle bin...

FYI - all this glorious new rubber is from smARTworks, more on that in an upcoming post!!!!

The Return of Flower Friday!

(Reminder - blog candy below, drawing Sunday night!!)
Ok so the clock will have struck midnight in Central Standard Time by the time I get this posted... it was Friday when I started the card, so I am calling this Flower Friday! I'm going to try to bring that weekly feature back to the ol' blog, especially now that winter is close at hand and we need these little reminders of the blooms from seasons gone by... I mean, this week in Austin it got all the way down to a frigid 59 degrees!! Bust out the fleece! Warm some hot cocoa!! *smile* I'm being a little sarcastic for the benefit (or dismay) of my blogging friends in the great frozen north... but I do have to admit, my Michigan blood is gone, and when it gets down that low I do get quite cold! But never fear, we are supposed to have highs in the 80s once again this week.............! ;-) So tonight's card was inspired by this week's Thursday Throwdown over at Colleen's excellent blog, Distinctive Touches. In the end, my card looks absolutely nothing like Colleen's painting, but the idea is to be inspired, not to reproduce exactly, right?? I was obviously inspired by the color blocks, and I was originally inspired by the colors, although I strayed a bit there and added much more green. Maybe the plant in her picture got the green in my head?? My computer is away from my stamp room, so unless I take notes I'm always doing these blog challenges from memory - which is precisely why I always botch up the sketch challenges - because my memory stinks!!! I also decided to play Colleen's challenge from the week before - to make a sympathy card when you don't actually need one. Thankfully I have nobody to send this card to at the moment, and I hope it stays that way. I just doodled the "so sorry" and frame around the main image - if you've been following along, you know this is something I like to do every so often. It makes me feel so BRAVE, when I've invested time coloring an image, to just pick up a pen and go crazy around the border! It's my own little adrenaline rush. Yes, I am a wild woman! :-) By the way, is it helpful at all if I leave the recipe at the bottom of the post? I used to do that, but then I got lazy. I'll try to start doing that again too. So here ya go....! (and thanks for stopping by today!)

  • Stamps: Oh, So Lovely (Level 1 Hostess Set)
  • Paper: So Saffron, Really Rust, Green DCWV Mulberry paper (I haven't used mulberry paper in ages - found it during my stamp room cleaning...!), Basic Black, Whisper White
  • Ink: Black StazOn, Really Rust (sponged on RR blocks for dimension)
  • Accessories: Prismacolors, baby oil, stumps, So Saffron brads, black organdy ribbon, black pen

Another RAK - from Leslie - could I be more lucky???

Make sure to check out my blog candy post, if ya like that sort of thing... (because some people DON'T like a chance at cool free stuff? Huh??) :-)

So here I am posting yet another RAK - am I making you all completely JEALOUS or what?? I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet lately! And all I had to do to get showered with these gorgeous cards was go through several months of all-day sickness ("morning" sickness is such a stupid term!), have my already-foggy-from-pregnancy-#1 brain turn even more to mush, and let all the sugar I've been craving like a mad woman go straight to my butt and thighs... no problem! ;-) Just kidding, this is a beautiful, magical time that I am treasuring every moment of... blah blah blah...

ANYWAY (wow did I digress...) this COMPLETELY ADORABLE card is from Leslie over at Running with Scissors, another one of my favorite stampers ON THE PLANET! I am always sooooo thrilled when something arrives in my mailbox from the Oregon coast - I literally squeal when I see that familiar return address! I absolutely love this card - that little chicken is just the cutest and I love the colors she used. You can read her take on this card here. And not only is Leslie immensely talented, she's also the sweetest person - she sent the cutest little pink outfit for the baby with owls on it (I LOVE OWLS!) (but to clarify, I do not love owls like Frances loves owls...!) :-) - and not only that, she also thought of Carter and sent him a stuffed monkey (which he LOVES)!! I don't know what I did to deserve her friendship - actually, I haven't done much - I really need to get some thank you RAKs in the mail to people ASAP! But thank you Leslie, hopefully you know how much I appreciate your kindness, even if I've only said so via email and my blog and not RUBBER!

How sweet it is - BLOG CANDY TIME!!!

Ok people - I said in the last post I'd do this tomorrow - but I figure there's no time like the present!! (for presents!!!!) (heh heh) I just wanted to give away a little thank you, to celebrate passing 25k hits, and because you all stuck with me during my absence! I'm in the (never-ending) process of cleaning out my stamp room, and set aside some things I thought you might enjoy-

* My Favorite Things "Back to School" set
* Basic Grey mini holiday album kit
* Funky black & white Primas
* Swarovski Crystals
* Making Memories thank you jelly labels
* Heidi Swapp edge distresser
* a frame ready for you to alter
* and some pink brads & eyelets

All you have to do is leave me a comment on this post between now & 9pm CST Sunday, Nov11 and I'll randomly pick a winner.

Thanks for playing and thanks for reading my blog!!!

Boy am I RUSTY!!

I debated whether I should even post this because I do not love it. It's my attempt at both CC139 - this week's color challenge to use Soft Sky, Wild Wasabi & Ruby Red, and SC149 - this week's sketch challenge on SCS. Especially after seeing some ADORABLE takes on the sketch challenge on some of the blogs I frequent (Carole, Frances, Laurie...), they've made me love this card even less. Ah well - what can I say - it was my first time actually sitting down to stamp in several weeks. Turns out I'm rusty!! I struggled until the wee hours last night trying to make this card work! Finally I just gave up (and I think a little too late - not sure the stickles on the deer were a good decision...) I know, I'm being too hard on myself. But it's just so frustrating when you sit down to use some supplies you're *so* excited about - I just bought this fabulous Basic Grey "Winterland" stamp set that I just *love*, and a Figgy mini pad of paper - I love Basic Grey stuff so much it should just magically make perfect cards when I sit down to use them!! And even more frustrating is that I wasn't starting from scratch - BOTH the sketch and the colors were already figured out, there was very little guesswork involved! *sigh* Guess this just means I need to get back in the groove and stamp regularly, and relearn how to make cute cards. :-) By the way, the sequins on the antlers are from Hero Arts - another supply I just *love*!! Thanks for stopping by! Oh and come back soon - I plan to post some GOODIES for my wonderful readers, probably tomorrow!!

Stamps - fun for all ages!

I foolishly left a box of stamps that I'm trying to get rid of out where Carter could get to them - apparently they are LOTS of fun to play with! Mommy's blocks!! Since taking this photo a few minutes ago, he's now found an alphabet set - he's just thrilled to have new ABC's to play with. He's over there singing the ABC song as I type this. The crazy thing is, I'm completely letting him do this. He's opening various boxes, taking them out and lining them up - I'm going to have a big mess to sort through later - but it's keeping him occupied and I'm getting some things done, so I say OH WELL! Stamps - they're kid tested, mommy approved!! :-)

Another RAK - from Rose Ann!

Well if you haven't noticed, I've been a very lucky girl lately!! I am trying to get caught up on all my RAK thank yous! Tonight's ADORABLE card is from Rose Ann, the sweetest stamper I know, who posts her wonderful art over at Paper Delightz. Many who have seen this card proudly displayed on my kitchen counter have commented that this cute pocket design would make a perfect baby announcement - so thanks Rose Ann, you may have saved me some struggles trying to figure out what to do with that! We'll see... if I procrastinate on the announcements as long as I did with Carter, I may have to go with a MUCH simpler design! (and my sister is probably reading this thinking "PLEASE go with a simpler design!" since she got stuck doing the majority of the work on Carter's announcements!!!) You can read Rose Ann's post about this card here. I feel so very fortunate that Rose Ann stumbled upon my blog many months ago - its new friendships like these that make me so very thankful that I went ahead with my crazy idea to start my own little blog!!! And I'm sure all of you visit Rose Ann daily, but if you don't, be sure to check her out! She completely puts me to shame, not only is she the busy mom to three adorable kids (I can hardly handle one!) but she is one of the most consistent blog-posters out there! I don't know how she finds time for it all, I truly think she's a wonder woman! Thanks again for this adorable card Rose Ann!!

Trip to Oklahoma City

A few weekends ago I took a trip up to Oklahoma City to attend the Zonta District 10 Conference. Zonta International is a global organization working to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Nearly 33,000 members belong to more than 1,200 Zonta Clubs in 67 countries and geographic areas. I am a member of the Zonta Club of Austin, where I currently serve as Treasurer and Service Committee Chair. This was my first time attending a district conference - it was a lot of fun, and a really nice change of pace. I carpooled up to OKC with 3 of my friends (and fellow stampers I should add!), so the girl time in the car was lots of fun to begin with! We arrived late Thursday night and didn't come home until Sunday afternoon - that's three nights away from home - the longest I've ever been away from Carter! After all the traveling my husband has done so far this fall, it was really nice to have some time to myself. Not that I don't love being with my son, but you know, sometimes we just need a break!! And it was good bonding time for Carter with daddy as well. The conference was hosted by the Zonta Club of Central Oklahoma. Our OKC hosts arranged for a very special evening for us on Friday night. We had dinner at the Oklahoma City National Memorial. I had wanted to visit the memorial ever since it opened and this was my first time ever making it up to Oklahoma, so I was happy that this was part of our planned activities for the conference. To say this place was moving is an understatement. The entire memorial is so well done. Visiting was a very emotionally draining experience. I clearly remember finding out about the bombing when it happened in 1995 (and it's hard to believe it's been 12+ yrs already!). I know there are several bloggers out there from Oklahoma, so I imagine it's even more vivid for you. I was a month away from graduating from Michigan State University - sitting outside my lecture hall waiting for class to begin. This was in the afternoon - the bombing had happened earlier that morning. I picked up a copy of the campus newspaper, and it was the headline. It didn't completely sink in how horrible it was until later that evening when I saw the coverage on the news. I was dismayed when I later learned the connection between Timothy McVeigh and my home state. When graduation rolled around in May, we were lucky enough to have President Clinton come and give our commencement speech. Although it's an honor I'll never forget, it turned out to be a less than ideal graduation speech - it was his first major speech since the bombing, so of course that's what a large portion of it focused on. Not exactly an uplifting speech as you're finishing school and heading off into the "real world"! (plus we had to go through metal detectors in our caps & gowns to get into the stadium, and we could see sharp-shooters positioned along the upper rows!!) He ended the speech by saying something along the lines of "but Michigan is more than Timothy McVeigh and militias (gosh I sure hope so!). The real Michigan is corn flakes and the best cherries in the world!" Woohoo, go Michigan! (I don't know why but at the time that really struck me as goofy!). Anyway - that's my little connection to the tragedy that happened in OKC. Back to my experience at the Memorial - walking through the museum was rather difficult. The part that tore me up the most were all the references to the children lost in the daycare. I just can't imagine what that would be like. And outside - all the empty chairs - and the small chairs representing the children. The grounds are really moving - a large reflection pool, with a wall at one end saying "9:01" and at the other saying "9:03". The bomb went off at 9:02am on April 19, 1995. 9:01 represents a time when everything was normal, 9:03 represents the aftermath. One part of the museum that I found really fascinating was the information about how they solved the case and learned who was responsible. I'm a CSI fan, so all that real life crime-detectivework interested me. So - if you ever find yourself in Oklahoma City, I highly recommend you take some time to visit the museum and pay your respects at the memorial outside. You will not be sorry, or soon forget your experience! (ETA: As I typed this it made me curious just how accurate my memory of my commencement speech really was, so I found a transcript online. Pretty interesting to read it 12+ years later!)

Sorry for the digression, hope you found it interesting - I'll be back to our regularly scheduled cardmaking programming tomorrow!

In CASE you missed it...

Tonight I'm posting a couple more cards from my October hostess club meeting. Both of these were CASE'd from very talented ladies I found on SCS - because I was having major creative block and CASE'ing makes my life soooo much easier! And, I just loved these cards!! Both used the Autumn Fest set from SU, one of my favorites for this time of year!

The first was inspired by this fabulous card by Joan Ness. I loved Joan's card and changed very little - just altered the layout very slightly and chose a different leaf. :-) The leaf was stamped using the baby wipe technique. We used dots of Old Olive, More Mustard and Ruby Red reinkers on a baby wipe, turning it into a unique ink pad. I just love how this technique looks on leaves! Thanks Joan for the wonderful inspiration!!

This second card was inspired by this fun card by dlounds. I thought it was just hilarious - so clever to use the nuts that way!! On my version we stamped the belated birthday sentiment on the inside. Thanks dlounds, this was such a great idea! I rarely send a birthday card on time (pathetic, I know) so I love fun ideas for belated birthday cards! And I just recently placed my first Close to My Heart order, so I got to try out one of my new alphabet sets for the "oh nuts!". I am really loving clear stamps for spelling out words - too cool!!!

I'm tired so I'm going to skip giving all the blah blah blah details about everything I used on each card - they are pretty simple cards, but if you're dying to know what something is, just leave me a comment and I'll get back to you! :-) Thanks for stopping by!

Super cute RAK from Dina!

Isn't this little birdie just the cutest thing?? I got this adorable RAK in the mail from Dina, aka Mama Dini, and it came all the way from Indonesia! A little while back I posted about gamsol, or odorless mineral spirits, perhaps not being the best thing to use while pregnant. I mentioned that I would give baby oil a try instead when coloring with my Prismacolors. Dina was so nice & left a comment with links to threads over on SCS regarding baby oil, and then sat down to play with baby oil herself, created this adorable card, and put it in the mail to me!! I'm such a lucky girl! You can read the details about this card on Dina's excellent blog here - and while you're there you'll surely want to look around a bit, if you've been living under a rock and have never visited before. :-) Thanks Dina, I so appreciated this very special RAK!

My Last Swap...

I made this Santa back in September for a swap hosted by Corie, one of the nicest & most thoughtful bloggers out there! You can see the rest of the cards from Corie's swap here, they all used sets from SU's Holiday Mini. The reason I titled this post "My Last Swap" is because I have officially sworn off swaps!! This is by no means a reflection on Corie or her swap, she was a fabulous hostess and all the ladies created gorgeous cards to share. I just happen to SUCK at swapping!!! I am always determined to finish early but without fail procrastinate until the very last minute (for this swap, I even emailed Corie and told her I'd be mailing them early, how embarrassing!). It always turns into a stressful ordeal for me. And this particular swap I messed up big time! Corie had specified we use SU products only!! See if you can count how many non-SU products are on this card! Let's see... Prismacolors, gamsol, Patina Stickles, Liquid Applique, black glaze pen, scallop scissors, Michael's ribbon, Cuttlebug... oh and the sentiment is from a RETIRED SU set, not a current set! Geesh!! I realized what I had done shortly before the swaps were due and emailed a confession to Corie - being the sweetheart that she is, she sent a super kind email back and told me to mail them in anyway! I so appreciated that. At any rate... I did like how this card turned out, but boy did I break the rules!!! So, no more swaps for me - maybe I'll follow rules better once the preggo-brain goes away (I am severely afflicted with it at the moment!), but I'm sure I'll still be a procrastinator. So if you see me signing up for one of your swaps (because I can rarely resist signing up, even though I know I have this affliction!) you may just want to send a note and REJECT ME!! :-)
