Any THEATER fans out there?!?

Today I'm sharing a sneak peek of a new FireCracker Designs by Pamela set that's coming out on September 1, and I am sooooo excited about it!! I grew up in a theater family. My Gramma was one of the founding members of my hometown's community theater group, and my mom was heavily involved with the group throughout my childhood (And still is! She's directing "Steel Magnolias" soon!). No, I never made it up on stage myself - are you kidding me?? If you ever meet me IRL you'll find I'm not exactly the On Stage Type. :-) However I did spend a whole lot of time backstage - helping to paint sets (my Gramma is also an AMAZING stage artist!), working props and scrambling in the dark during set changes. And watching countless rehearsals for all the shows my mom either directed or stage managed. To say that I love live theater is most definitely an understatement. But my love is weak compared to my mom & my sister! My sister (also a stamper) and I have discussed on MANY occasion how we've never come across any good theater stamp sets. Finally a couple months ago it hit me - DUH - ask Pamela if she'd be interested in making one!!! And I did ask, and she was, so my mom, sister and I brainstormed some ideas, I sent them to her, she added her own awesome design talent to it all and now I have the rubber in my hot little hands and I ADORE IT!!! I can't wait for you to see the entire set, she added so many fabulous phrases to it!! For this card I used the light, director's chair, masks and two of the sentiments - she left the chair blank so you can personalize it! I created the little spotlight on the chair myself (as I'm sure you can tell - I'm sooo not an artist!). The stream of light is covered with Gold Glimmer Shimmerz for some added sparkle. The color combo is the latest Color Throwdown Challenge, and the sketch comes from Jen del Muro. So are there any fellow theater lovers out there?? If so you are going to NEED this set, trust me. I can't wait for you to see it on Tuesday!!! Gee, have I mentioned that already? :-) Thanks for stopping by today. :-)

The FCD 2008-2009 Design Team Says Goodbye!

Can you believe my year as a member of the FireCracker Designs by Pamela design team is already coming to an end? Yup, that's right, it is! How quickly time flies when you're having fun! And not to mention when you're lucky enough to have the absolute honor and privilege of being on the design team of a wonderful company like FCD! To mark the end of a great year, the team is doing one last blog hop together - and can you guess our theme this time around? Of course we are all saying "farewell!" or "I'll miss you!". For my card I chose to use the fabulous new Elephants on Parade set - because they say an elephant never forgets, and I will certainly never forget my year as card designer for Pamela! Of course, my card doesn't exactly reflect that sweet sentiment now does it... LOL!! I couldn't resist using this expression from the set, because it completely cracks me up! And since I am NEVER on time with birthday cards, this is just soooo *me*! :-) I got out my brayer to create the background on this, thanks to another brayering lesson this afternoon from my pal Lydia! However, as I played with this card, I decided to cut it down from the panel I had originally brayered (or is it brayed, I don't know!) and it lost some of the drama of the sky. Oops! But I have to say I am really having fun with the brayer, so you'll hopefully see something soon with a wonderfully dramatic sky!! LOL! I added just a wee bit of colored pencil under the elephants to add some shadow, and all of the buttons were sewn onto the paper, which I'm finding makes them far more stable than using glue dots!

And now for the fun part of the hop - this time around Pamela has created a little scavenger hunt!! Follow the hop all the way around and you will get a bunch of letters for a code - put them together in order, with the letter from Pamela's blog being the start of the code, and you can use that code for 25% off your entire FCD order!!! (Note: this does not include magazine subscriptions) My code letter is "T". And not only that, as always Pamela is giving away blog candy to one lucky commenter on the blog of the "mystery hostess", so be sure to leave comments as you hop around so you're in the running for some rubber goodness! The hop ends on Monday, August 31 at 8pm EST.

And now... hop on over to the incredibly talented, SCS Dirty Dozen Superstar, all-around nice stamping phenom Julie and see what she'd been up to. I cannot wait to see myself because I just know it will be GORGEOUS!

And just so you know... I may have said at the start of this post that this marks the end of my FCD DT stint, but in reality I haven't shared a single card with my August DT set yet!! And you know why? Because it's a new set that will be released on September 1! But let me just say... I LOVE IT!!! It's another one I begged Pamela to make. AND SHE DID!! (I love her!) Can't wait to share it with you. Actually, I *won't* wait. I'll be back tomorrow with a sneak peek! YAY! And... I have some EXCITING FCD NEWS!! Make sure you visit Pam's blog today to find out what it is! :-) :-) :-) Thanks for stopping by today! :-)

Our Michigan Vacation!

I'm going to put a bit of a warning label on this post - WARNING - it's a long one, filled with *vacation photos*! No cards today. And so very sorry if you are on dial-up! But you know me, I can't help inflicting my family photos on all of you... :-)

We spent last week in Michigan, which was wonderful - got to see family while enjoying cooler temps - just what we needed after the ridiculously hot summer we've had here in Texas!! The main purpose for our trip was our niece Gina's wedding. Here's Courtney looking so sweet all dressed up!Immediately following the wedding we headed Up North, where we spent our week in a rental house on Lake Louise in Gaylord. The kids had so much fun playing in the sand...and swimming...Carter went out fishing for his very first time with Daddy, Grandpa & Papa!He was sooooo excited when he caught his first fish!!Of course a highlight were the evenings we sat outside around a bonfire. Is there anything better than that during a Michigan summer Up North?? Here's a family photo:Carter helped Mommy toast marshmallows and tried his first s'more! He was absolutely CRAZY about them!! (LOL - this is such a goofy photo of him!!)We went on a couple day trips from the cabin, first over to Traverse City for some of my very favorite thing, Black Cherry Ice Cream!! Yummmmm! (for those of you in my Facebook "Getting Healthy" group, this was a "small", I swear!! I'd hate to see the large!! Well ok, maybe I wouldn't *hate* it that much....!) :-)We also went up to see the Mackinac Bridge (aka "The Big Big Bridge" as Carter calls it, after one of his Thomas stories!)Then over to Mackinac Island, where we rented bikes to ride around the island. Such a beautiful place for a bike ride!!One night we went out driving after dinner looking for elk. We found a majestic herd out in a meadow, can you see them? The zoom on my camera isn't great, but we had binoculars with us! (and clicking on the photo enlarges it, fyi!)Later we found out that the city of Gaylord maintains an elk herd of their very own! Although I prefer to see them out in the wild, this was fantastic for the kids, they got to see them right up close, and Carter even fed them some hay! They were up in the pen area for feeding time, but they also had a huge meadow they could wander out into.Grandpa celebrated his 75th birthday at the rental house, so Carter and I made him some cupcakes.Courtney couldn't believe I let her try some! :-)Our final full day in Michigan was my birthday, and we spent it at my parents' home down in Clio. The kids LOVE it there - so much space to run around in, animals to see, tomatoes to eat right off the vine...! My dad has an AMAZING garden - here's Carter sitting on the crazy-huge pumpkin Dad had growing...!!Here's my parents, or Grammy and Papa as they are known.Courtney enjoyed smelling the flowers. Although if you look closely, she is actually trying to EAT these cosmos...!There isn't much Carter likes better than a birthday, because he knows birthdays and cake go hand in hand! He sat ready to begin dinner before dinner was ready...! But for my birthday, my own Gramma made me a YUMMY berry cobbler. Carter wasn't thrilled, but then he realized there was ice cream... :-)All in all, a fabulous trip! When we left Gaylord Saturday at lunchtime, the car said it was 57 degrees outside. When we landed in Austin on Sunday at lunchtime, the car said it was 97. Back to the land of the scorching temps... we miss you Michigan!!
Thanks for stopping by today!

Happy Birthday, Lydia!! - a blog hop!

Today I want to wish A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LYDIA, aka @understandblue!! To celebrate in style, some of her Twitter friends (Tweeple??) had the grand idea to throw a little blog hopping celebration for her! If you just happened upon my blog, make sure to go back and start at the beginning - Angelique's blog! Me, I like to think I'm more of a Blogging, Facebook, and now IRL friend of Lydia's - I came onto the Twitter scene late. :-) But because Lydia is so sweet and friendly and all-around wonderful, right away she introduced me to her aforementioned Tweeple! So here I am, hanging out with them on this blog hop, celebrating our @understandblue's birthday! I decided to make a card for Lydia, because as most of you know, that's what I do. I made my card mostly blue, because rumor has it Lydia is quite fond of blue...! :-) I chose this cutie patootie pig image from The Greeting Farm because I had to do something with a critter on it - Lydia is one of the biggest animal lovers I know! And although I'm not quite sure how much she adores pigs, I do happen to know she is quite fond of bacon. Doh! :-) I played with Jen's latest Sketch For You To Try for the layout. The sentiment - "The Sky's the Limit" - just seems so appropriate for Lydia. With her talent, and the enthusiasm she puts into everything she does - truly, the sky is the limit for her. Actually, maybe she's not even limited by the sky!

I do truly hope you'll take a moment and hop with us - if you're typically only a card-blog-hopper, you're in for a treat. This hop includes other types of people - can you imagine?? :-) Authors, artists, geeks... which brings me to the next stop on our tour, my very own geeky little brother, Jon. If you live under a rock and you've never visited Lydia's blog, you'll certainly want to do that - she's super talented at both cardmaking AND writing, and has a wonderful sense of humor to go along with it! And again, a very happy birthday to you, Lydia!! xoxox

From Courtney's Closet #54 - an inspiration challenge

Welcome to another edition of From Courtney's Closet, where I make a card inspired by one of my baby girl's outfits. This week I'm going back in time a few months and using an older photo of Courtney. I just love this little green cherry dress but never got around to featuring it on here! But then just recently I saw this new Cherry stamp from Hero Arts and I just knew I had to use it with this outfit!! The big cherry is layered & popped up, and covered with Diamond Glaze. So do you feel like making a cherry card?? Or a bright green & red card?? Leave a link back here if you do so I'll know where to find you. Thanks for stopping by today!!

Some sad news...

Hi everyone - we're still on vacation in Michigan, but I wanted to pop in and tell you about the sad news we heard from home yesterday. You may remember, last summer I posted about the visit to the vet, where we were shocked to learn that our dog Cole had a heart condition and may not be with us much longer. Well now I know, he had almost exactly one more year left in him. My brother, who was dogsitting, called yesterday morning to let us know he had died peacefully in his sleep. Of course I'm sad, we didn't get to say goodbye to him, but I'm also incredibly thankful it happened this way - without any pain or suffering, and when my kids were not home to witness any of it. We had been to the vet again just a couple weeks ago for his yearly exam - the vet told me he was our miracle dog to still be around, and even had me listen to Cole's heart myself with the stethoscope. He gave me a handout of all the awful things that might happen as Cole's heart began to fail, including seizures. Thank goodness it didn't come to any of that. And my poor brother - who loved Cole just as much as we did - I'm so thankful for him, who had the sad task of finding Cole, and who took care of everything. Everyone who knew Cole agreed that he was pretty much the sweetest dog on the planet. He was so good with the kids, extremely patient and loving despite the chasing and tail-pulling and other less than great things toddlers do with dogs! He would go on his patrol every night down the hall where the kids sleep, making sure all was right and often lying down to sleep right outside Carter's door. (I'm still not sure how I'm going to explain this to Carter, my three year old, who has talked about missing his Cole Dog several times on this trip already...) At our last visit to the groomer a couple weeks ago, I saw they noted on the form "very good dog". Indeed he was, a very good dog. RIP Sweet Cole.

(PS... You know if I were home there would be a dog card to go with this post! Sad I am not able to make one now, stamping is my therapy! You will probably see one in a week or so...!)

Quick and Easy

A couple weekends ago I had the pleasure of spending my Saturday at a crop with my friend Karen! It was so nice to get to be crafty all day long and catch up with Karen. While at the crop I got to play with other people's tools they brought to share - including a plethora of Cuttlebug dies and embossing folders!! I really loved these flowers, so I decided to throw together a really quick and simple card with them. Fun stuff! Thanks for stopping by today. :-)

Brayering the day away...

A few weeks back Jimmy Sue, owner extra-ordinaire of Texana Designs right here in Central Texas, came over for a little lesson in brayering. The only problem was, I didn't know what in the world I was doing!! But I did all I could think to do - look up a Michelle Zindorf tutorial, and wing it! (I don't have the particular tutorial I used handy at the moment, but if you'd like to know let me know and I'll look it up for you next week...) The wonderful pelican image is from Texana. I'm pretty sure I was able to achieve that wavy look to my brayering simply because my brayer is warped!! After this day of playing I quizzed my friend Lydia on brayering, and not only did she give me some pointers, she also gave me a non-warped brayer!! She is the best!! I plan to play a little more with brayering soon - I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. :-) And here's a photo from my afternoon of brayering with Jimmye Sue - who was so sweet to my son, who took an instant liking to her and rambled on and on about his animal cards, and invited Jimmye Sue to come back some other time to sit on the couch next to him and watch Madagascar. :-) Thanks for stopping by today!

Watership Down!!

I knew I *had to have* this image from MFT as soon as I saw it - I already loved Flopsey, but for him to be reading, and have Watership Down in his book collection - LOVE IT!! That was my favorite book in high school. And it just cracks me up that it's in this bunny's literature stack. So do you like how I used a mini library clip for my book-y card? hee hee :-) Thanks for stopping by today!

Why I should use a Stamp-a-ma-jig...!

Today I share with you my Ode to the Stamp-a-ma-jig, and why I should use it.

Me: "I don't need no stinkin' SAMJ, I can just eyeball it, it will be fine!"

Reality: A crooked row of owls that would have been so much cuter if nice and straight.

*sigh*

You live and learn. Did I learn? Probably not, I detest messing with a SAMJ. But, I do know that I *should* use it...! :-)

This card is as close to Stampin' Up Only as I've come in ages! Just the DP is non-SU. Well, and of course the stitching too, but I think that is "allowed" and not considered "contraband". :-) The owl stamp was colored with a pink marker, and then the edge colored over with a caramel marker. Fun! Thanks for stopping by today.

Gotta Love Texas!

Oh you know I sure do love me some Texas!! But every now and then it's nice to leave Texas and see other places - you know, places where the temperature is not 100+, where maybe just maybe it might even be pleasant to sit around a *campfire* on a summer evening... It seems like I vaguely remember a place like that from my youth... hmm... :-) I'm being silly, but wanted to let you know I'm heading up the homeland this week, the great state of Michigan, so I'll be looking forward to an inbox absolutely overflowing with your fabulous comments when I get back. Right??? ;-) But do check back here this week, as I've actually managed to make a few things ahead to schedule - *gasp*. :-) This cute little card I'm leaving you with has an image and sentiment I completely love from Deadbeat Designs. That's me in the middle, with my glittery pink vest and hat. HA! Not likely. But it's fun to imagine... :-) Thanks for stopping by today!!

From Courtney's Closet #53 - Courtney's Playdate!

Welcome to another edition of From Courtney's Closet, where I make a card inspired by one of my daughter's cute little outfits. Except today it's the second Thursday of the month, which means it's time for playdate! Yay!! Today's inspiration came from sweet little Hannah, daughter of the mega-talented Stacey Schafer of Stacey's Stamping Stage. She looks just as cute as can be posing in her sweet little blue outfit!! I love a girl in blue. And when I was thinking about girls in blue, I decided I wanted to break out my new "Wonderland" set from The Greeting Farm. Isn't it the cutest?? I bought it when I saw it at half price recently - with the Alice in Wonderland movie coming next spring, I decided I just *had to* have a Johnny Depp stamp! HA! But today I played with Alice, not Johnny... errr.... The Mad Hatter. :-) But unfortunately for all of you who now *need* this stamp set too, it seems to be out of stock at the moment. Bummer! Details you can't see in the photo - the blue spots on the mushroom and Alice's dress & shoes are coated with clear Glaze pen, and her eyes have a little shine from black Glaze. The heart on her dress is covered with Sakura Stardust pen. The nifty little button/ribbon embellie is something I learned from Susan. And the grid paper behind Alice was a Target dollar bin find. :-) And now check out Stacey's card, it's just gorgeous, as always!! Stacey is an absolute expert at using big flowery-type embellishments on her cards - I just love the accordian flower she made this week! And the flower center goes so well with Hannah's ADORABLE blingie flip-flops!! Make sure you head on over to Stacey's blog and tell her how much you love her card and what a precious daughter she has, ok? :-)So what do you think? Wanna play along with us this week?? Make a card and leave a comment back here so we know where to find you! And an fyi - I'll be away from my computer next week, so you have TWO weeks to play along - I won't be doing the round-up until the following week! (But I do have an FCCC card scheduled for next week...!) So no excuses, you have *two* weeks to play along with this one!! :-) I sure hope you will!
  • Stamps: Wonderland from The Greeting Farm
  • Paper: Ballet Blue, Bo Bunny DP, grid paper from Target dollar bin
  • Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black, Copic markers, clear & black Glaze pens, Sakura Stardust pen
  • Accessories: Spellbinders Labels One die, Janome Sew Mini & white thread, grosgrain ribbons, button, Linen thread
I also wanted to dedicate this card to a friend who is celebrating the launch of his new publishing company, Awkward Press, and the release of their first collection of short stories, Awkward One. Jeffrey and his cohorts are seriously FUNNY - check it out, but a warning it may be a little much for a few of you super conservative stampers out there...! :-) Plus he's one of my brother's oldest friends, and in case you are perplexed as to why this card is dedicated to him - he's also the biggest Alice in Wonderland fan I know. Congratulations & good luck, Jeff!!

From Courtney's Closet #52 - Roundup!

Last week's From Courtney's Closet post was mostly just me showing off my kids - HA!When I say only one person played along, I really mean *only* one person - because I didn't even get around to making a card myself!! So I'll be adding it to my list of cards I want to make eventually...! But would you just look at the card that WAS made?? Caryl created this beauty, inspired by both of the kids' bathingsuits. Love it!!!Thanks so much for playing along Caryl - you're better than me! :-)

Oh how I love this lattice!!

I'd be willing to bet that not many of you are aware that I'm a Stampin' Up demonstrator - am I right? Well I am, and have been for over five years now. But I'm just not a very good one! :-) But I certainly do looooove me some SU and get excited about the new catalog releases and hearing all about Convention!! The big, annual Convention was this past weekend, and I got to live vicariously through friends like Lydia and Suzy. And now I'm completely inspired to play with a bunch of my sadly neglected SU goodies!! But today's card only used one little stamp, the sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes. The rest was a diecut, and was actually something I was lucky enough to make on Lydia's Big Shot when I went to a stamp class at her house a while back. We got to cut out that gorgeous Lattice, and the bird from Birds & Branches. Lydia had designed the black panel to go on a smaller white card, but I botched mine up thinking I could place the sentiment she provided straight on the card without a stamp-a-ma-jig, but I was sadly mistaken. So, I put it together at home and used a larger card and the wedding sentiment, since I needed a card for my cousin. This card is sooo simple and sooo pretty! It makes me totally want a Big Shot, but I'm still resisting. For now. :-) Thanks for stopping by today!!
  • Stamps: Teeny Tiny Wishes
  • Paper: Whisper White, Basic Black
  • Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black
  • Accessories: Big Shot, Lattice die, Birds & Branches die

From Courtney's Closet #52 - an inspiration challenge

If you're looking for the Our Craft Lounge blog hop, please scroll down or click here.

Ok everyone, because I've been staying up WAY too late making cards lately, I decided to take the night off from stamping and just go to bed early. Um. What happened? It's 12:45am and I'm still awake!?! But, I didn't stamp. That was silly!! Since I won't have a From Courtney's Closet card to show you until who-knows-when (but hopefully soon!) I thought I'd go ahead and post the inspiration picts anyway! In case you want to get started on your own cards... :-D Several of you liked having my boy featured last week, so I thought I'd go ahead and give you an OPTION this week! This photo is of Carter and Courtney in their swimsuits, on a morning playing in the sprinkler park down by our public library! Carter was being sweet, and Courtney was unsure of his motives. LOL! So you can make a girlie, flowery card based on Courtney's suit, or a blue/green/tropical fish/surfboard inspired card from Carter's suit. :-) Or just a watery card. Whatever, the sky's the limit! :-) I'll be back later to edit this post with my card, so please stay tuned!! Happy stamping!! Ok I can't resist, here are a couple others! :-)

From Courtney's Closet #51 - Roundup!

If you're looking for the Our Craft Lounge bloghop, please scroll down or click here.

Last week I changed things up just a little and shared a photo of Courtney's big brother, Carter, instead! It was a rare photo where he was actually looking at the camera, and smiling! *gasp*I love the cards it inspired, here they are...
First there was Kate, who gave me the idea to share a photo of Carter this week! I just love her cute card! She was worried that she didn't have a dino stamp, and instead used a dragon. Well first, it doesn't matter. But second - she did a superb job getting rid of his fire & wings, I think! :-)Kathryn made this polka-dotted cutie, which of course I love!Sue's card just makes me smile, what a CUTE blue dragon carrying pressies! It was very fitting that the Spicey Cat Chick made an adorable cat card! LOVE the gems in the button holes!I hope Jenn doesn't mind that I'm using this sweet photo of her cutie holding up her card! And how FUN that she made her card shaped like a shirt!! I've been meaning for ages to make an FCCC card in the shape of clothing - now you've inspired me again Jenn, I may have to do that soon...!And finally my favorite - Sharon! Her card is really clean & simple, which is nice, and I think the image she used is completely CUTE! Sharon, send me an email if you'd like my "featured" button for your blog. Thanks everyone for playing along this week!! And thanks for stopping by!
ETA: My geeky brother, who loves all things dragon AND dinosaur, gave the definite "seal of approval" on using dragon stamps in place of dino stamps. He pointed out that dragon legends probably began when people found dino bones. So there ya have it! ;-) (He couldn't, however, approve of using dogs or cats in place of dinos, lol! But no worries, he's not a stamper so he doesn't understand... hee hee)
ETA#2: My brother was highly offended when I claimed he was not a stamper, so I have to show you that he actually played along with the Cinema Saturday Challenge a while back, look here. Pretty cool & geeky, aye? :-)
