Some sad news...

Hi everyone - we're still on vacation in Michigan, but I wanted to pop in and tell you about the sad news we heard from home yesterday. You may remember, last summer I posted about the visit to the vet, where we were shocked to learn that our dog Cole had a heart condition and may not be with us much longer. Well now I know, he had almost exactly one more year left in him. My brother, who was dogsitting, called yesterday morning to let us know he had died peacefully in his sleep. Of course I'm sad, we didn't get to say goodbye to him, but I'm also incredibly thankful it happened this way - without any pain or suffering, and when my kids were not home to witness any of it. We had been to the vet again just a couple weeks ago for his yearly exam - the vet told me he was our miracle dog to still be around, and even had me listen to Cole's heart myself with the stethoscope. He gave me a handout of all the awful things that might happen as Cole's heart began to fail, including seizures. Thank goodness it didn't come to any of that. And my poor brother - who loved Cole just as much as we did - I'm so thankful for him, who had the sad task of finding Cole, and who took care of everything. Everyone who knew Cole agreed that he was pretty much the sweetest dog on the planet. He was so good with the kids, extremely patient and loving despite the chasing and tail-pulling and other less than great things toddlers do with dogs! He would go on his patrol every night down the hall where the kids sleep, making sure all was right and often lying down to sleep right outside Carter's door. (I'm still not sure how I'm going to explain this to Carter, my three year old, who has talked about missing his Cole Dog several times on this trip already...) At our last visit to the groomer a couple weeks ago, I saw they noted on the form "very good dog". Indeed he was, a very good dog. RIP Sweet Cole.

(PS... You know if I were home there would be a dog card to go with this post! Sad I am not able to make one now, stamping is my therapy! You will probably see one in a week or so...!)

  6. what sad news I know how you are feeling I lost my dog 10 years ago and I still miss her as do the rest of the family- we have another dog now but they never seem to take the place of the past one - i love them both. Be truethful to your children about the situation and explain in as simple terms as you can-maybe plant a tree or bush in memory and give your children part of the responsibility of looking after it so they will feel connected to him even though he may not be there in person he is always with you in spirit. love to you all and my heart goes out to you all.try to enjoy the rest of your vacation as much as you can and as you say he went in peace - from one down under

  17. I'm so sorry, Libby. This makes my heart hurt for your family, especially the chart note, "very good dog". Since you knew it was coming I guess it happened in the best way possible, but still so very sad. Your very good dog had a very good life with your family. Small consolation, I know. Take care.
