Follow the Recipe #16

Oh my goodness, it's been over a month since I've played along with Linda's Follow the Recipe challenge!! That is just way too long. But... the good news is, I've unpacked the majority of my stamp room, and last night I broke it in with my very first card! I'M BACK, BABY!!! And, I followed the recipe! :-)


I *had to* play along this week, the sponsor is one of my very favorite stamp companies, Deadbeat Designs! But I have to admit, going through my drawer of Texas stamps, figuring out what to use, made me a wee bit sad that I'm no longer actually a Texan! *sniff* I guess it only makes sense that I created this card as I was feeling blue...! Other than the color choice, I did a pretty decent job of following the recipe...

Inspired by Christine's darling card, I chose to incorporate:

The Play Date Cafe Challenge #77

I'm so happy to be playing along with The Play Date Cafe this week, I've missed it sooooo much the past two times when I've been up to my eyeballs in house selling madness. I just love her. I combined her with a Deadbeat Designs greeting. I've had that fringe in my ribbon stash for ages, just waiting for the perfect image to use it with. Today was the day!! :-) I also made a rolled ribbon flower. I have a die to do that, but I was too lazy to pull out my Big Shot so I just cut it by hand. Guess what - it worked just fine.

Texas Tuesday on a Wednesday...

Yup, I'm late posting this week's Texas Tuesday. But I decided better late than never, because I wanted to tell you about a fun class I took on Sunday at Stamp Salado! This shop is about an hour away from me, but worth the drive every now and then. The class I took was Watercolor Crayon Techniques. I've had watercolor crayons sitting in my drawer for a while now - I used to use them all the time, before Copics came along and ruined me for all the other coloring mediums!! This class reminded me why I should dig them out more often. I can't make bluebonnets like these with Copics!


To stamp these Texana bluebonnets (our beloved state flower of Texas, which you know very well by now if you've been reading my Texas Tuesday posts! :-) ), I dipped the watercolor crayon into water and then colored directly onto the stamp. I had no idea that was even possible!! I love the look - very watercolory and pretty. I stamped these in class and then put them onto a card at home, combining the image with one of my very favorite Texas messages from Deadbeat Designs.

Joyce Meyer taught the class - she's a wonderful instructor and artist. She designs a line of stamps (Jam'n Stamps) that are sold through Texana Designs. She does most (all?) of her drawings in a single line. So cool! Here are a few of the other samples I colored in class.

Merry Texmas!

Hi y'all, it's time for another Texas Tuesday! Today I am here to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas, Texas-style! Up first, a super fun and Texas-y Christmas image from Texana Designs:


I love the boots! I gave them a little Glossy Accents shine, as well as some Stickles shimmer on the tree:


The sketch is more or less the latest Mojo Monday, and the colors were inspired by last week's Color Throwdown (why can't I ever play this challenge on time anymore??):


For my second card, I thought I'd *attempt* to be creative with my stamps. I loved this Texas Christmas tree card that Mark made last year, but sadly never got around to getting the stamps I need to recreate it. So I stared at my Texas-themed stamp stash trying to find something to use for a holiday card, when I saw my Deadbeat Designs bluebonnet stamp...


What do you think, can it pass for a wreath? I inked up the stamp repeatedly with a marker, so I could color the leaves green and the flower portion red. It was hard to space it perfectly, but I sorta like how it finally came out. I added a little Stickles to this one, too - I happen to think that Christmas cards REQUIRE a little shimmer and shine!


Before I go, I thought I'd share this little Christmas ballad that my dad used to sing to me when I was a kid. Ahhh, the memories. Isn't it sweet?

Texas Tuesday - Thinking Inking-style!

Today I'm sharing the third card I made the other night after watching Thinking Inking Week 6 on 2 Peas. I pulled out my Deadbeat Designs bluebonnet stamp and tried out the double resist!


I love how this turned out - although I botched it up a bit with that message. It says "Sending you a big ol' Texas hug!" - it's a little easier to read IRL, but not much. I probably should have stamped it with brown StazOn rather than Distress ink. Ah well, you live & learn. I love this double resist technique though, what fun! I followed Jennifer's instructions, even using the same colors of ink. It was really great to bust out something that's been in my drawer for YEARS - my massive stash of glossy cardstock from my Stampin' Up days. I should make a ton of double resist cards now!!

Hope you liked my Texas-inspired card! It's getting rather cold in central Texas these days - you know, by central Texas standards, not Minnesota standards!! Texas Tuesday

By the time you read this, I'll either be at the surgery center getting the carpal tunnel release on my right hand, or it will be over & done with. So if you don't mind, please send some good healing thoughts my way! The left hand was a breeze (so thankful!), but I'm right handed so the recovery time (ie the time without stamping!!) may be slightly longer this time. We shall see...

But before surgery I was determined to get a Texas Tuesday post scheduled!! I don't want to even think about how long it's been since I got my act together on a Texas Tuesday post, it's too sad.


I'm not a huge football fan. And actually, when I do cheer for a team it's my Michigan State Spartans!! But I live in Texas now, and Texans are football-crazed. And I live in Austin, where the University of Texas is located. So I took this A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E little football boy from Hambo Stamps and dressed him in a bit of burnt orange.


The Longhorn stamp in the background is from Deadbeat Designs and the sentiment is also from Hambo. I'm not sure Longhorn fans are really having a ball this fall... poor them. I think I'll tuck away this card to send to somebody next September.

Texas Tuesday with an old Texas relic...

Howdy y'all! It's time to shine up yer boots and crank up some Lyle and hang out fer a little Texas Tues-steppin'! Ok, ok, I know, I really shouldn't attempt to talk Texan. Even though I've been here for about 15 years, I'm still too much of a yankee at heart. But even if I wasn't born in Texas, I got here as fast as I could! hee hee That's a popular Texas bumper sticker. I couldn't resist. BUT ENOUGH SILLINESS!!! Let me show you my card!


Ok, I apparently wasn't done with the silliness because this card is completely silly too! First of all, I used a Deadbeat Designs image that completely cracks me up! Well, sort of anyway - I pulled this one out because I'm feeling like a bit of a (transplanted) Texas relic. I'll be "celebrating" my first annual 39th birthday this Sunday, and I am none too pleased about it. The clock has begun ticking - only one year left to become 40 and fabulous! ACK! Or not, if I just start celebrating my 39th birthday annually...

As for the sketch for this card - I used Maria's Mojo Monday idea but took it in my own somewhat silly direction:


Check out the historical marker, does it kinda sorta look stonelike? I tried the technique where you pour a little Copic colorless blender solution onto a rag and smoosh it onto the image you've colored. It gives it a fun look. Of course, I think all the historical markers I've seen have been metal not stone. WHATEVER!


Since I mentioned cranking up some Lyle, I feel it's my civic duty to provide some Lyle to crank. Here's a favorite, since... that's right... I'm not from Texas...

Texas Tuesday featuring Deadbeat Designs!

Hey Y'all! It's the first Tuesday of the month so you know what that means - time for a little Texas Tues-steppin' with some of my fellow cowpokes! This week I have something special to share. If you've been following along, you know that Mark from Deadbeat Designs is part of our little Texas Tuesday team. Well, for this week's post he was kind enough to provide one of his brand spankin' new stamps to all of us to play with! Yeehaw!!


The new stamp is that gorgeous Texas Our Texas collage on the left. I paper pieced it, first stamping it on some old light blue polka dot paper from my massive stash, and then again on kraft. The star is colored in with a white gel pen. Then I decided I simply needed to add more Deadbeat goodness to my card! The red panel is patterned paper that I stamped with Mark's Bandana Flower, and the sentiment is called Big and Bright. Mark has a really excellent selection of Texas-themed stamps (and lots of other fun stuff too!), so all you fellow Texans, cowboy junkies and even you lonestar wannabes really need to check out Deadbeat Designs! ;-)

Texas Tuesday!

Hi y'all! Sorry I'm late posting this - but hey, it's still Tuesday! And today's the first Tuesday of the month, so it's time for a Texas-inspired creation!


I'm loving this guitar-playing cowboy image from Deadbeat Designs. Did you know that Austin, Texas is the live music capital of the world? I read it on the wall in our airport, so it must be true...! Well if nothing else, I'm sure you've heard of a little show called Austin City Limits, have you not? We've caught a lot of fantastic live shows since moving to Austin, although not so many in the past few years since losing our social lives (aka having kids). But I do have to say that one of the very best things that happened to me when I moved to Austin was I discovered this man:

Sigh. Lyle Lovett. I love him so much!! I can't even remember how many times I've seen him live now. I'm thinking at least seven. Maybe more? We saw him this past November and he was just as wonderful as always. Here's a song I've been humming lately, "and the lights of, LA County, were like diamonds, in the sky..."

We just got back from a vacation to LA County! (Although, please note, we did NOT bring a .45 with us on our vacation...) We did stuff in and around Los Angeles - we took the kids to Disneyland, among other things! (we ventured outside of LA County for that...!) :-)

Texas Tuesday meets Oklahoma!

I need to ask a favor. Will you please pretend that I posted this on Tuesday? Thank you. I have a new feature I've been trying to start for a while now called Texas Tuesday. Every Tuesday I will feature cards with a Texas theme, or created with stamps by Texas companies, or whatever I'm feelin' is good 'n' Texasy that day! What d'ya'll think, sound good? Disclaimer: when I say "every" Tuesday - that actually means every Tuesday that I've gotten around to stamping something Texasy to post............! But without further ado, here is my first Texas Tuesday (on Thursday) card:


It was created with stamps from my two favorite Texas-stamp-making-peeps: the image is from Deadbeat Designs, and the message is Texana Designs. The card is nice and Texasy, yes? Well no, it's supposed to be Oklahoma-y, so since we've already been pretending, let's pretend those gals are Sooners, not Texans, k? I made this card to play along with this week's Cinema Saturday Challenge, which you've probably guessed by now is Oklahoma!


I was so happy when I saw the selection this week - Oklahoma! has always been one of my favorite musicals. It's just so happy (well, except when Poor Jud is Dead, of course!). I remember as a kid, probably no more than five years old, riding my bike at my Grandpa's farm and going full speed down a hill singing out "OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING, OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!". Good stuff.

The rule for the challenge this week was to use gingham (and might I add, paper-piecing those gingham shirts was a bit of a PITA!). I chose that red ruffly ribbon because another of my favorite Oklahoma! songs is "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" - I had no fringe but this was as close as I could get. The sketch is this week's Mojo Monday challenge:

Now before I go, I have to share something that I just discovered this week. I don't think it's possible for me to love Hugh Jackman any more than I do after watching this!! Total swoon.

Newsflash: I STAMPED JUST FOR FUN!!

So I've been sorta bummed out lately. Why? Not sure exactly. But one theory is that I haven't stamped purely for fun in ages!! I looked back just now - it seems I snuck in one just-for-fun card back in December. DECEMBER!! Ack. Everything else has been for a purpose - birthday parties, classes, blog hops. Not that I mind doing any of these things, but still - every now and then you have to just stamp purely for fun, with no purpose or end goal! So that's what I did tonight. And boy do I feel better than I did this morning!

Even though this card was purely for fun, I did have some inspiration. I left a comment for Mark over on the Deadbeat Designs blog, telling him that I had no stamping mojo. He replied & suggested I stamp some bluebonnets. That Mark sure is a wise one. Nothing makes this Texan (wait - can I officially call myself a Texan?? I've lived here nearly 15 yrs now, does that qualify me??) - anyway - as I was saying, nothing makes this Texan happier than thoughts of spring and bluebonnets! So this is what I made:The bluebonnet stamp and the "Sending you a big ol' Texas hug" sentiment are both from Deadbeat Designs. That poor greeting got a little lost in all the distressing, but it's easier to see in person. Another thing you can't really see is the gorgeous shimmer this card has - I spritzed the entire thing with Iridescent Gold Glimmer Mist. Yum. The straight pin & half pearls were white, I made them blue with a Copic. Love that!

Now my goal is to keep up with the stamping therapy, to keep my spirits high and my mojo intact! Thanks for stopping by today!

Gotta Love Texas!

Oh you know I sure do love me some Texas!! But every now and then it's nice to leave Texas and see other places - you know, places where the temperature is not 100+, where maybe just maybe it might even be pleasant to sit around a *campfire* on a summer evening... It seems like I vaguely remember a place like that from my youth... hmm... :-) I'm being silly, but wanted to let you know I'm heading up the homeland this week, the great state of Michigan, so I'll be looking forward to an inbox absolutely overflowing with your fabulous comments when I get back. A Big Ol' Texas Hug!

This is the card I made for this past weekend's shoebox swap up in Dallas. I figured a Texas-y event needed a Texas-y card! In case you haven't heard me ramble on about them before, the flower on the card is called a bluebonnet, and it's our state flower. We adore them. They bloom in the spring and are wildflowers, lining our roads and filling our fields. Ok, maybe the showing hasn't been *that* great lately thanks to our ongoing drought, but I did enjoy the ones we did have this past spring. Actually, did I ever show you our photos we did in the bluebonnets this year? Hmm... perhaps I'll have to post them down below for anyone who's interested (I can already hear the massive yawn coming from my readers! (All three of them!)). :-) Anyway, back to the card. Of course I completely stressed about this card. I have such a hard time figuring out cards for swaps!! The card is supposed to be made in no more than ten minutes. TEN MINUTES. The card I brought to the Austin swap last fall ended up being a little bit of a bottleneck. So this time I was determined to keep it simple. And I think I made it a bit TOO simple!! Especially when I got to the swap and realized people still did super duper complicated cards, but the kicker was that they PRESTAMPED or PRESTITCHED or PRE did whatever was needed. The amount of pre-work some of the ladies must have done, WOW. I am still in awe. So next time I'll know. And maybe I'll even start planning my card more than a couple nights before the event so I have time for all that prep work...!! But I hope the ladies at the swap liked my super simple Texas hug. It was a really windy day, and getting the kids to actually pose was pretty close to impossible. But some of the more candid shots are my favorites anyway!I just love this last one of Courtney because her dress was so fluffy and cute in the wind! And wow, it was only about two months ago, but she looks so little here! *sigh* My babies are growing up too fast!! Anyway - the bluebonnets are long gone now, but I know they'll be back next spring and I'll be happy to see them pop up once again when they are ready! But I don't want to think about how old Carter and Courtney will look then...! :-)

From Courtney's Closet #37 - a very, very LATE inspiration challenge!

Well I told you I'd be back with my card for this week's challenge - I just didn't think it would take me THIS long!! Geesh! But here it is, at long last. :-) To those of you who left comments on my last post, THANK YOU, I love reading comments (who doesn't, right?) and so appreciate them. But fyi I think I'm going to delete that ramble of a post after I get this one up. :-) So here is my fun & Texas-y card, inspired by Courtney's cute little denim and bandana outfit! This stamp just cracks me up - it's from Deadbeat Designs, as well as the sentiment (WHICH I LOVE!!). I stamped my funky little cowgirl three times - maybe they are doing a line dance or something. Actually I think it looks more like they are doing the Walk Like an Egyptain! (I swear one day I'm going to do 80's week on my blog!!) (Which I suppose means that I will declare it is "80s Week" and then not post anything again for a week... sigh...) LOL! Ok back to the card - I paper-pieced their dresses with bandana and denim DPs. The boots and hats were colored with Copics, and then coated with Star Dust Stickles because of course my funky cowgirls love their bling! The little hat embellishment was in one of those button assortments you get at Michael's or in the Archiver's Hot Spot (think that's where I found mine) - it was silver, which didn't go with my aged copper brads, so I colored it red with a Copic. Not sure metallic red goes with aged copper brads, but oh well! :-) So what do you think?? Like Courtney's oufit this week?? Want to play along?? She just altered it on the computer and BAM! Perfect, beautiful card! :-)Karen's post CRACKED ME UP - go and read it for yourself. :-) And I just LOVE the super cool quilt card this outfit inspired her to make!Ananya was back for a second week in a row (YAY!) and made this cute card. Love the brown polka dot present!Sue made this gorgeous card - and I am loving that sentiment! Darn you, Sue, you evil enabler, you! :-)Donna made me a little sad when she referred to my BABY GIRL as a TODDLER (!!!) but she did make this super cool card, using a rubberband technique!?! I'm intrigued! Guess I need to head over to StampTV and check it out! (and yes, Donna, you're probably right, but I'm not ready for her to be a toddler just yet!!) :-)And finally, my favorite of the week, Stacey!! I just LOVE this card!! I love the flower dies and punches she used, and those buttons in the flower centers. Such a fun card!!
